If you ask me which is the universal Raaga of Hindi Film Music then the honor would go to raag Yaman. Many people may argue that it is Pahadi, but Pahadi doesn't have any strong characteristics like Yaman, and Pahadi is often considered as Ragini than raag.
Yaman's USP is it can convey any emotion. Mostly the Teevra Madhyam which is one of the distinctive factor of Yaman acts as a catalyst; whatever emotions being conveyed.
If I take an intersection of Yaman and HFM, then there are 3 individual I can see even from a distance. Getting closer we will find other smaller but important contributors.
First is Lata, second is Roshan and third is Mukesh.
Lata for her effortless prudent singing, Roshan for his love for this raaga, which the son Rajesh also seems to have inherited and Mukesh for the honesty in the voice....
Yaman is also called Kalyan. The carnatic classical equivalent of Yaman is called Kalyani.
Yaman classically is classified into 2 versions Suyog Kalyan(meeting) and Viyog(seperation) kalyan and If you see the Nitrogen and Oxygen of the whole HFM is only these 2 bhavs (feelings). There are few patriotic (veer ras), lullaby (vatsalya), comedy (hasya) and devotional (Bhakti) but they are the other gases. However Yaman have touched upon these too at some level.
